1. You wrote to John Stewart on 14 November about the telephone conversation between the Home Office official and Mr B G Kennett, a PWD Estate Surveyor, who was enquiring about a passport for his adopted daughter. During the conversation Mr Kennett was told that "discussions were going on about Homg Kong's independence in the 1980s".

I have taken up with the Home Office this remarkable statement and I enclose a copy of their reply. It has, as you suggested, proved impossible to track down the offender, but I am happy that the action the Home Office are now taking will prevent a recurrence.
