Annex A to D/Svy 3/1/60 dated 4 May Apr 78.

2ND RAFT (AMENDED)

DEPICTION OF HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY

INTRODUCTION

1.

The boundary of Hong Kong and the New Territories as delimited in the Convention of June 1898 and the Memorandum of March 1899 is accepted by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as having de facto and de jure status but particular rules have been agreed for its depiction and description on all maps produced by the Director of Military Survey or his Assistant Directors either in the United Kingdom

or overseas.

SECTIONS OF THE BOUNDARY TO BE SHOWN

2.

Only the following sections of the boundary will normally be shown:-

&. The Northern Land Boundary

3.

b. The Open Sea Boundary, commonly referred to as the "Square" boundary.

Except in the cases specified at paragraphs 4 and 5 the sections of the boundary which follow the WEST coast of LANTAU ISLAND and the NORTHERN coasts of MIRS BAY and DEEP BAY are to be omitted entirely. These sections are not to be described in note form on the face of the map or in the margin.

4.

When specifically required by the user and with the prior approval of Survey 3 the omitted sections may be shown. Any such cases are to be given a security classification of at least RESTRICTED.

5.

At scales of 1:5 million and smaller, the entire length of the boundary may be shown.

BOUNDARY SYMBOL AND KEY DESCRIPTION

6. When a map or series of maps includes only the boundary of Hong Kong and the New Territories in total or in part then one of the following symbols is to be used:-

7.

a. +++++ at scales 1:20,000 and larger

b. +-+-+ at scales smaller than 1:20,000 (the dash may be bent to follow the precise alignment).

For coloured maps, the conventional red stipple may be added to either of these symbols.

8. These symbols are to be described in the legend by the single word "Boundary". Exceptionally, where it is considered that there may be some risk of confusion with other types of boundary then the description may be expanded to "Boundary of Hong Kong and the New Territories". The term international boundary is not to be used.

9.

When a map includes international boundaries in addition to that of Hong Kong then the Hong Kong boundary is not to be accorded the special treatment at paragraphs 6 and 8. It will be shown as an international boundary in accordance with the specifications for the map or series of maps.
