obtain a comprehensive understanding of the way Hong Kong's economic affairs are managed.
BRITISH EXPORTS TO HONG KONG
6.
British exports to Hong Kong rose by 33% in 1977 to total £271m. This made Hong Kong our third largest East Asian market, after Japan (£469m,) and India (£278m.), well ahead of Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, etc. Exports to Hong Kong were more than four times as great as those to China. Much of this achievement is due to the personal efforts of the Governor, who has gone to consider-- able lengths to interest British exporters in the Hong Kong market. The Minister recently sent a personal message to the Governor expressing appreciation of his contribution to this achievement. The Minister may wish to renew his congratulations
when he meets the Governor and particularly to tell him of his
pleasure over the Cathay Pacific Airways decision to buy Rolls Rovos
engines for their new Boeing 7470.
RENEWAL OF THE GOVERNOR'S APPOINTMENT
7. It has recently been agreed that The Queen should be advised to extend the Governor's appointment until August 1979. This has not yet been announced publicly, although the Governor himself is aware of it. It is hoped that an announcement will be made on
21 March. If a suitable opportunity arises, the Minister may care to express his pleasure at this decision, but he will wish not to mention the decision in the hearing of anybody else from Hong Kong
