Many thanks for your letter of 20 June about your leave plans. My own leave (mostly in the Isle of Eigg) runs from the end of next week until 6 August so I will be back in the saddle by the time you get here. I have been maaning in any case to write to you about possible dates for my inaugural visit to Hong Kong. The feeling ; here is that I should come sooner rather than later, both on general grounds and because of the possibility (now probably diminishing) that the Secretary of State might visit China and Hong Kong in the autumn. That points to September rather than October. When I spoke to him on the telephone yesterday, Denys Roberts thought that September would be a good time, and Phillip Haddon-Cave said the same when I saw him today. I will try to have a word with the Governor when he returns next week, but in the mean time I should be grateful if you would take any further soundings you think necessary. My tentative thinking is that I might fly out on Friday 8 September and return to London aver the weekend of 23/24 September.

The only real snag about these dates is that they co-incide with your visit to London. That may be an argument for postponement by a week or so. In any event I hope that you will get in touch with me when you arrive so that we can have an opportunity to meet before you go up to Scotland provided that will not cause you too much inconvenience.
