Many thanks for your letter of 30 June about your plans to come out here in September. I certainly agree that it would be a good idea to come as soon as possible.

I have had a word with Denys Roberts about the dates you suggest. Apart from the problem of my own absence, they would be perfectly feasible. However, from both a personal and work point of view, I would be much happier if I had returned before your visit is completed. We could then tie up any lose ends in my own field. Another consideration is that Jack Cater will be taking over from Denys Roberts at the beginning of October. You might like to be here after he has installed himself and perhaps also listen to the Governor's speech to Legco on Wednesday, 11 October which will set the pattern of Government policies for the following year. All in all, both from by own point of view and from yours, I suggest you plan to be here during the first two weeks in October. Denys Roberts agrees with this suggestion.

In any case I will make sure that I call on you when I return to London and before going to Scotland. My present plans are to arrive in London on Sunday, 20 August. If it is convenient to you, I will plan to come into the Office on the morning of Monday, 21 August and then carry on to the hills of Scotland the next day.

I fear this letter will reach London when you are already happily ensconced on the Island of Eigg. I expect, however, that somebody can telephone you (or send a fast carrier pigeon!) if you are wanting to tie up plans for coming here before returning to the Office in early August.
