Whilst you are sitting in your office dreaming about your forthcoming holiday on the Black Sea, or anticipating the delight of steaming borsch in a train travelling through frozen Siberia, another man in another office is considering your visa application and deciding whether or not you should be a target of his country's intelligence service. As you are a Government Servant, the decision will most likely be yes. Whilst you are making your plans they will be making theirs.
Nature of the Communist Intelligence Services

The Intelligence and Security Services of Communist countries play a large part in framing and carrying out the policies of their governments, both in relation to their own citizens and to those of other countries. The largest and most active of the Communist intelligence organisations is the Russian Intelligence Service but those of other Communist countries are also formidable in size and they usually operate in close collaboration with each other.
Aim of the Communist Intelligence Services

The principal aim of the Communist intelligence services is to obtain information, not only about the defence and security of other countries but also about commercial, financial and industrial developments. This aim is pursued tenaciously; it extends to seeking in considerable detail information on scientific and technical progress. Another aim of the Communist intelligence service is to recruit foreign nationals to work for them in their home countries, often in some minor intelligence support role. They are therefore always on the watch for anyone who may be induced, either willingly or unwillingly, to co-operate with them.
