It said the Hongkong-Canton ferry pier will be located in Tai Kok Tsui. It is believed the ferry company has secured an exclusive franchise to operate the sea link to Canton.

This could mean that attempts by the Shun Tak Shipping Company to establish a sea service with its fleets of jetfoils, hydrofoils and ferries will not materialise.

The Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company may have to build a new pier in Canton before they can start their Hongkong-Canton hoverferry service.

The building of the pier is one of more than 20 terms the company will have to meet before being allowed to start the service.

The pier, with modern facilities, will replace the pier at Whampoa harbour. It is understood that the operation would be on a profit-sharing basis. It was learned that both sides at first planned to start the service only early enough for the opening of the autumn trade fair in the middle of next month. One reason for the postponement was due to the lack of hoverferries. The Yaumati Ferry Company had ordered four crafts from Britain and one has already been delivered.
