TRANSLATIONS FROM HONG KONG PUBLICATIONS

From time to time I have sent you (and copy addressees) items translated by the local office of the US Foreign Broadcast Informatɣion service from Hong Kong newspapers and magazines. A latest example is enclosed, the october issue of "Cheng Ming" on Hua's family.

For further circulation we need to have these translations retyped since we get ours in the form of a telegraphic copy on blue paper which does not photo- copy well.

I have been wondering whether this is always necessary. These translations seem not to be carried in the B B C's S W B series. I think this is because the B B C only uses - only has the right to use – radio material from F B I S: I should be grateful if you could check on this point. However, I understand that telegraphic copies of the original F B IS newpaper/ magazine translations do go to the BBC and I wonder whether they could not supply copies more quickly to you and other interested departments in London. Equally, Peking may be able to get a copy from the U SLO.

Through liaison here with the US Consulate- General and direct with Lee Butkus who heads the FBIS office we can suggest local material which we hope FB IS might be interested in translating. It is always a great help when they agree since the F B IS translators are probably the best in Hong Kong, especially for material about China. However, there are items of more narrow Hong Kong/UK/China interest which F B IS are understandably less interested in and which we can have translated by Government Information services Department here.
