The

Many Hong Kong people were attracted to

visit China because of the scenic beauty

of famous resorts, the impressive effects of monumental buildings, and the magni- ficence of Chinese culture in many

visible forms. Others were curious to

find out what the country was liko

after their many years of absence. emotional effects arising from their sentiments for the homeland were strong and real, and those who visited Peking, the Great wall and Hang Chow for the first time were overwhelmed by the mesmeric effects of the atmosphere of historical glory and grandeur. (j), However, many Hong kong visitors,

including those from low-income groups, were disillusioned by the very low standard of living and the apparent backwardness of the country, and the experiences left them in no doubt as regards the hard life that people on the mainland had to live, probably for many years to come. ith all its imperfections, living in Hong Kong has

so much more to offer. Un their return, they may well encourage friends and relatives to visit China, but the over- whelming majority do not cherish the

thought of returning to China to live permanently.

young intellectuals who, motivated by

national patriotism, consider it a noble calling to return to serve the
