1. I enclose a copy/copies of a Research Assessment which is an abridged version of the recent OEIC paper (CEIC (77)38) entitled "China: The Economy and Foreign Trade in 1976-77." The paper reviews China's economic and trade performance in 1976, assesses developments in 1977, and considers the outlook for the economy under the new leadership.
