Export Performance of UK and Major Competitors

ble V, based on OECD trade statistics, is designed to demonstrate the size of the Chinese "market" (ie total exports of CECD countries to China) both for all products and for specific commodity categorics. It shows the percentage share of each "market" held by the EEC and its major constituent countries UK, FRG, France and Italy - and the two other main competitors in the China market Japan and the USA. OECD exports account for 70-80% of China's total non-Communist imports.

INTERPRETATION

a) Japan dominates each "market" but the EEC has a healthy share of each

except textiles. In a year, 1976, which saw OECD exports to China fall by a quarter the EEC actually increased its share of the trade by 6. This was largely done to the good export performance of FRG and France whose exports reflected the fulfilling of plant and machinery orders placed in 1973-4.

b)

c)

UK's performance has declined since 1973 compared to her 2 main EEC partners except in the transport equipment sector (aircraft) and textile products. In 1976 Italian exports to China exceeded those of the UK.

The varying performance of the USA both overall and in the transport equipment sector is an example of the extent to which national export performance vis-à-vis China is often directly related to a specific contract or contracts (in this case the purchase of Boeing 7075)
