HONG KONG'S PLACE IN UMITLD FRONT WORK
You will no doubt have noticed that the nev constitution adopted at the 5th NPC includes a reference to Hong Kong in the sixth paragraph of the preamble. This passage sets out the components of the "Revolutionary United Front":
*led by the working class and based on the worker-peasant alliance, and which unites the large numbers of intellectuals and other working people, patriotic democratic parties, patriotic personages, our compatriots in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and our countrymen residing abroad,"
This is the first time that the constitution has included such a reference. The sentiment is not new but this prominence no doubt reflects the importance which is nov attached to the developments of United Front work in Hong Kong. A further sign of this is that FEI Yi-min, the publisher of the TA KUNG PAO, vas elected to the standing Committee of the CPPCC, the first time it has had a member from mong song.

Hong Kong residents were well represented at both the CPCC and PC Leetings. The Nev Lvening Post identified 18 at the CPPCC and 16 at the NP C (lists enclosed for Research Department and Peking only). FEI was the only person common to both lists and was on the Praesidium for both meetings.

Representation from Hong Kong at both meetings was greater than in the past (we are still checking earlier records and hope to produce a full comparison in due course). Our impression is that the types of
