To enact new legislation to control pollution.

The final report by Environmental Resources Ltd., which is largely concerned with draft legislation, enforcement measures, and organisation for a wide range of environmental protection measures, was submitted in July and was, together with an appreciation prepared by Environment Branch, discussed by the Advisory Committee on Environmental Pollution (EPCOM) at the end of September. Following this, further consultation with Government departments was completed by early December.

The next steps are

(i)

consultation with industry and other sectors of the community that are likely to be affected by the proposed legislation; (ii) detailed drafting of the water

pollution legislation; and

(iii) consultation with industry etc.

on noise and air pollution legislation proposals.
