HONG KONG AND GENERAL DEPARTMENT:
MR PATRICK WILLIAMSON
1.
Your minute of 10 March to Mr Beamish asked whether we could cover a fare-paid journey by Mr Williamson to Hong
The position is that we could Kong at the end of this year. do so provided that he was returning to the FCO for a second
This will be the case if his tour of reasonable length.
but we would be hard put extension runs to say April 1982;
You may to argue a case if he left the FCO much before then. therefore wish to cover the question dealt with in paragraph 4 of your letter to Mr Rowlands before coming to the point about the fare-paid journey. On the latter, you might say that, if Mr Williamson's extension runs to April 1982, this would have the incidental advantage of making it easier for the FCO to consider covering a return journey for him and his wife.
