APPOINTMENTS DIVISION
330 vacancies within PSC's purview were advertised
locally between 1.11.77 and 31.1.78. On 31.1.78, 260 posts
were under recruitment overseas (including 24 Police
Inspectors for 1977/78). 131 newly appointed officers
(including 57 Police Inspectors) assumed duty from overseas
between 1.11.77 and 31.1.78.

Recruitment to the rank and file of the Police
Force between 1.10.77 and 31.12.77 totalled 413. On 31.12.77
there were 506 vacancies in the rank and file establishment
of 16,386. The establishment is expected to increase soon
and the recruitment target from 1.1.78 to 31.3.78 is 692.

Since the scheme to re-deplov surplus Government
primary school teachers to other jobs within the Education
Department and other Government departments was announced
in July 1977, 247 such teachers have been re-deployed or
had their applications for early retirement approved.
The estimated surplus by September 1980 (the date when
compulsory retirement will take effect, if necessary) has
therefore been reduced from 1,100 to about 850 so far.
GENERAL GRADES DIVISION
4.
Of the 2,652 strong Secretarial Class, only
134 officers in the obsolescent grade of Shorthand Audio
Tvnist who have not accepted Government's option to regrade
to "Stenographer" are in dispute with Government, 197 of
their colleagues having already elected to regrade.
