In 1972/73, about 1.8 million people or 44%

of the total population (39% of households)

lived in rental public housing. By 1977/78,

the number of public housing tenants had

increased to over 2 million people representing

nearly 45% of the total population (38% of

households).

The rapid development programme now being

implemented should result in there being

3.3 million persons in public housing by

1984/85, representing 65% of the population

(49% of households).
