The redevelopment programme for the old Mark I and II estates

was initiated in 1972. The programme is gathering momentum

with 8,250 families (47,000 people) having being rehousing from

blocks due for demolition/conversion over the period 1972/73 -

1977/78. During the same period, 2,280 new flats were produced

through redevelopment/conversion.

Over the next 7 years between 1978/79

1984/85 it is expected

that about 36,000 families (202,000 people) will be rehoused

from blocks due for demolition/conversion and that over 20,000

new flats will be produced by redevelopment.

Supplementary to redevelopment schemes, efforts will also be made

to accelerate the rehousing of families living in overcrowded

conditions in the older estates both by moving them to new estates

and by making available adjoining vacant flats. Between 1972/73

and 1977/78 nearly 21,000 families have been reaccommodated under

this programme. Over the next seven years, it is proposed to

rehouse a further 47,000 families assuming that at least 10% of

new stock can be made available for the purpose.

Additionally, more generous provision is being made in the

allocation of space in new flats. In 1972/73, a standard of 3.3m2/person of net living space (5.0 m2 gross/person) was the

2

general rule. This has now increased to 4.3 m net/person

2

(6.1 m2 gross/person) and should further improve as household

sizes continue to decrease.
