Over the past 6 years the stock of rental
public housing has increased 14% from 348,000
flats in 1972/73 to 398,000 in 1977/78 (end of
year totals).
Over the next 7 years, the stock should increase
by a further 51% from 398,000 flats in 1977/78
to 600,000 flats by the end of 1984/85.
The annual production of new flats should reach
a level of 36,000 from 1979/80 and in order to
maintain this level of production beyond 1984/85
it will be necessary to open up new development
areas.
