This Report contains the summary of findings and the computer tabulations of an.
opinion poll conducted for the Reform Club of Hong Kong.
The main objective of the survey is to find out the public's attitudes towards elected
representation in the Legislative Council and their preference of voting system.
A probability sampling technique is used in order to achieve representation of the
whole population which is defined as Hong Kong residents aged 18 or over. The
definition is so set that existing voters and non-voters are included.
Fieldwork was carried out from 29th September to 24th October, 1977. A total of 990
respondents were interviewed personally but 4 of the questionnaires were rejected.
Full details of the sampling method and the technical aspects of the study are given
in the Appendix which is bound after the computer tabulations.
At the time of the Survey, we estimate there were 2.7 millions adults aged 18
years and over in the land areas of Hong Kong (i.e. excluding outlying islands and marine population). Since a probability sampling technique is employed, the findings.
can be projected to the entire population under study. Nevertheless, readers are
reminded that the figures contained in this Report are subject to normal degree of
statistical error present in all sample survey data.
A copy of the questionnaire used for this opinion poll can be found at the very back.
of this report.
