the Chinese market, it will be easy for Britain to make billion pounds of
profits annually. On 5th October, the Japanese press reported that this
year's Japanese exports to China has already exceeded 100 billion Japanese
yen. Since China has always been friendly with Britain, it seems natural
that Anglo-Chinese trade should surpass that of Japan.
The obvious advantage of expanding trade with China is the
immediate reduction of British unemployment and the growth of the British
national wealth. We are certain that Sir Murray Mac Lehose is able to
contribute a great deal in realising the desired end. He has served among
Chinese people many years and has acquired the talent of speaking the
Chinese language. As quite a few of today's Chinese governmental leaders
come from Hupeh, they regard Sir Murray very highly as he can converse
with them in their native dialect.
On the basis of the foregoing analysis, it becomes crystal
clear that re-extension of Sir Murray's term of office as the Governor of
Hong Kong will bring numerous advantages. There is no doubt his extended
tenure will be profitable to Britain, to Hong Kong and to China.
Let us take a further look at Japan's endeavour for more
Chinese market. (1) The Japanese Minister of Trade has asked his
Government to support Japanese merchants to satisfy the needs and demands
of China. (2) The Japanese Government has long ago expressed their
willingness to explore Chinese oil reserves with China.
