Temporary Acting Governor
I received earlier today igles reston's letter of 26 February and the despatch, which he mentioned, desimpting the Attorney General or, failing him, the thief Justice an Acting Governor. As another letter from him said that he will be away on leave for ten days, I am roptying to yo, to make two points.
2. The first is that all of us here (including the Thief Justice personally) fully accept that there are obvious dangers inherent ii having a Chic Justice act on a Governor. Indeed had we been able to
think of another candidate to suggest as long-stop we should have done
In the absence of anyone more suitable, we certaiuly accept
that if the Chief Justice were ever called upon to not we should take urgent steps to relieve him of his temporary duties..
$0.
3. The second is that the Governor has settled the dates of his recond trip since I sent telogram number 30 on March. He will be going to New York on the afternoon of Saturday 20 Harch and returning here about midday on Tuesday 23 March. We presume that there is no objection to
this.
