Watson,
On my return from leave this week I saw your most interesting letter of 13 July about capital punishment. I know you have already had a chance of talking this problem over with members of the Department. Robin McLaren has reported to me on your conversation, and I hope you were reasonably reassured by what he had to say. I hope also that you drew some comfort from the realisation that we are indeed very conscious of the difficulties of the situation for the man on the spot described so clearly in your letter. We shall continue to keep a close watch on the situation.
