GOVERNORS' TERMS OF SERVICE

1.

I think the

whats happens with & à ads port

I have, on my return, now seen your letter HKA 431/1 of

3 October.

2.

Now I have been afforded an allowance sufficient enough to cover my frais, including entertainment needs, at this post,

The most sub- I am reasonably happy with my terms of service.

stantial problem remaining is the one you refer to payment of mid-tour leave journeys which, if one leaves it to be dealt with as in Colonial regulations, places an embarrassingly heavy burden on local Government funds.

3. There is, however, another potentially awkward problem deriving from an article in a document described as "Notes On Procedure etc for Governors-General and Governors of Dependent Territories". I have an old copy of this, and I presume its provisions are still in force. Paragraph 12 says:-

4.

"Servants

In most Colonies provision is made from Government funds for the payment of some of the servants necessary in Government House, for chauffeurs and gardeners. Other servants needed are paid by the Governor. The principle is that Government ie presumably the local Government defrays the cost of maintaining Government property and for the cleaning of public rooms etc and that the Governor pays those servants who are in attendance on him, his family and guests."

Apart from the chauffeur, who also acts as steward/butler, I have four living-in indoor servants paid for by the local Government. They are: housekeeper, cook and two maids. A11 are needed to keep up this rambling old mansion and offices,
