ANTHONY JOHN HUNTER OBE
He is
Mr Hunter was born on 14 May 1928 in Sheffield.
married with four children. He was educated at Flying Hall and King Edward VII Schools, Sheffield, and at Sheffield University where he obtained a BA (Hons) Class II in 1949.
He served as a Second Lieutenant with a Pioneer Company of Mauritian troops in the Middle East from 1949-51. After the completion of his National Service, Mr Hunter was employed by Brintons Limited, Kidderminster, from 1951-56, first as Assistant Marketing Manager and later as a Sales Trainee in the
London office of the firm.
His first Colonial appointment was as an Administrative Officer to BSIP in 1956, and after gaining general Secretariat experience he became an Assistant Secretary in the Natural
Resources Division. He acted as Commissioner for Labour and
Deputy Financial Secretary on several occasions and in 1966 was in charge of the salaries review. Later in that year he was appointed Senior Assistant Secretary (Finance), and continued to act as Deputy Financial Secretary and Financial Secretary as necessary during the absence of more senior officers. In 1969 he was promoted to superscale 4, and to superscale 3 in 1971 on promotion on transfer to the post of Assistant Resident Commissioner in GEIC. In 1972 he was promoted to Chief Secretary and in 1974 he became Deputy Governor. In October 1974 he
transferred to Hong Kong on secondment as Staff Grade C, Administrative Officer and promoted to Staff Grade B in August 1975. He is presently Deputy Secretary for the Civil Service.
Mr Hunter is a forceful, determined officer of the above average intellect and sound judgement who welcomes responsibility and does not spare himself in the performance of his duties. He is confident of his own ability, good on paper and in discussion, ambitious and dependable, and inspires confidence in colleagues and subordinates. In a confidential report, dated July 1972, the Governor commented that:
