VACANCY FOR ATTORNEY-GENERAL, HONG KONG
1. Your Senior Legal Adviser, Mr I M P Evans, recently
attended an interview for the post of Attorney-General in
Hong Kong and was subsequently placed on the short-list of
those now being considered for the appointment.
2. He has raised with us the question of whether, in the
event of his being offered the job, he would be able to take
it on secondment from your organisation to the Hong Kong
Government. This would mean that he would not lose his
pension rights and would presumably also involve an under-
taking from you to reinstate him at the termination of this
be awares appointment. It is for three years. You should knew that,
although the FCO are actively concerned in this appointment,
the successful candidate will be employed and remunerated
wholly by the Hong Kong Government. They have confirmed that
they have no objection in principle to secondment.
It is now
necessary for you to consider whether you are prepared to
give a similar undertaking. This would probably involve the
Hong Kong Government paying to you for the period of the
secondment a sum equal to your contribution to Mr Evans's
pension. The details would need to be worked out in due
course if Mr Evans is the chosen candidate. I must emphasise
