I spoke to the Attorney General in Hong Kong this morning in response to Hong Kong telno 1097 (copy attached). I explained that the Chief Clerk was on leave, that you were acting in his stead, and that action was in hand on Sir D Roberts' letter to Sir E Youde.

2. I said that those concerned here thought that the right way to identify potential Attorneys -General currently working in Whitehall would be through an informal approach to the Treasury Solicitor. Mr Freeland was writing to Sir B Hall accordingly. It seemed unlikely that this approach would produce a long list of/candidates - indeed, we would be lucky if any emerged but we would do what we could.

3. Mr Hobley expressed appreciation; his main reason for wishing to speak to Sir E Youde had been to make sure that something was being done about the request for help and advice in Sir D Roberts' letter. He recalled that that letter had mentioned his willingness to come to London. Perhaps it might help if he were to talk to Sir B Hall so that the latter would have a better idea of the sort of candidate Hong Kong were looking for? He would be ready to come next week or from 2 October onwards. I said I would let him know about this as soon as possible. I have since spoken to Mr Freeland who undertook to mention the idea to Sir B Hall.

4. Mr Hobley added that Sir D Roberts had also written to Mr. Bourne in the Lord Chancellors office asking for advice on how best to identify possible candidates from the British Bar. A helpful reply had already been received. It was clear that a visit by Mr Hobley would be useful in that connection also.
