ATTORNEY-GENERAL, HONG KONG

The office of Attorney-General for Hong Kong is expected to become vacant in the spring of 1979. The Bar Council, with others, have been asked to assist the ilong Kong Government in the filling of this office.

The attorney-General is an ex officio member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council of liong Kong. lis Chambers provide most of the legal services required by the Government. The three main divisions in the Chambers ar responsible, respectively, for the conduct of criminal prosecutions, the provision of legal services in civil matters, and the drafting of legislation. There are now 115 lawyers in the Chambers. Applications for appointment as attorney-General are invited from members of the Bar. Broad legal experience is essential, though the long Kong Government recognise that it is unlikely that any applicant from the practising Bar will have experience in all three main fields of responsibility.

The Government expects to appoint a candidate with a minimum of 2 years' experience, and the preferred age is about 50.

The appointment will be on non-pensionable terms for an initial period of 3 years, but the successful candidate may resonably expect to hold office for at least six years.
