Dear John,
MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES
1.
INTE
You wrote to my predecessor on 21 February about the general problem of obtaining adequate funds locally for the upkeep and maintenance of Government Houses.
2. Your paragraph 4 is very much to the point. Anguilla is heavily grant-aided and as you can imagine there are many competing local priorities for expenditure on social and economic development. It is comforting to note, therefore, that in future it may be possible to find the necessary funds from the UK.
B. Following normal practice there is provision in the Anguillan Estimate for staff wages and uniforms, utilities, upkeep of grounds, incidentals etc. As regards the other items mentioned in your paragraph 5, my estimate of annual cost after discussion with our PWD is EC 6,000 (or about £1,200) broken down as follows:
Maintenance of building including internal and external painting (three year cycle with one third of the work completed each year) and structural repairs:
EC
2,500
Flumbing and Electrical Repairs
1,000
Replacement of (and/or repairs to) window fittings including louvres and curtain rods and fly screens
400
Repairs to perimeter fence
500
Annual replacement of furniture and
furnishings
1,600
