MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES IN CERTAIN
DEPENDENT TERRITORIES
1.
Further to my minute of 13 June, I have now heard
from the Governor of St Helena. I matkané attach a
copy of
the telegram herewith. Paragraph 1(B) and (C) relating to the residences of the Administrators
of Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha should be
disregarded, as our proposal relates only to the
Government Houses occupied by Governors, not those
of other officers, even though in these two cases
they are in charge of separate islands.

Plantation
the favoriteat House on St Helena is of unique
Government Houses historic in portance among a rovidere, as Mr Guy explains. It should certainly not be allowed to deteriorate, but considerations of financial stringency will doubtless prevent it being maintained to a
standard as high as it might deserve. Perhaps Mr Duff,
WIAD, could tell us whether there has ever been a
proposal by St Helena to raise money for a memorial on the island to Napoleon. It might be worth considering whether the Residency might not be so designated and public subscription sought for its improvement. However this is rather outside the scope of the present-exercice.
