MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES
1. On 15 March I wrote to John Stewart in answer to his letter of 21 February on the above subject.
2. In my letter, I asked, inter alia, if HMG could provide $5000 for repairs to the roof of Government House; and I now write to ask whether there is any prospect of funds being made available at an early date. I appreciate that
decisions on such matters take time but on the other hand the leaks through the roof seem to increase daily and something ought to be done fairly soon. The trouble is that the roof is flat and temporary patching merely drives the rain-water to another point of entry. To be effective, the whole roof area needs to be coated with a waterproof composition.
3. I am due to leave here in October and can cheerfully put up with the leaks until then. I am concerned however that my successor will not think that I have made no effort to improve matters.
