MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES

1.

انه

Would you please refer to Robin McLaren's helpful letter of 5 September (reference HKA 364/1) addressed to me and copied to you.

2. I have delayed writing to you until I could get a firm estimate of the cost of repairing the Government House roof. This has now been provided by the Public Works Department and, as usual, is rather more than the original estimate. The PWD now say that to do a proper job there should be a new timber roof sloping inwards from the parapet to a central channel, plus two new 6" rain-water pipes, at a firm cost of $10,000. The FWD has also observed that unless the roof is made water-tight, the damage to the fabric of the building will merely increase until, eventually, a new Government House will be required. The PWD has also recommended repairs to the roofs of the three servants' quarters attached to Government House, at a total estimate cost of $3000.

3. I should be glad to know if I could now submit a formal project application for the total of $13,000 which is required.

4. I am sorry I will not be here when you make your visit in December.
