HONG KONG: LETTER FROM MR JAMES JOHNSON MP

1. Mr James Johnson MP (Labour Kingston-upon-Hull West) wrote to Lord Goronwy-Roberts on 7 September to invite his views on a letter he has received from Mrs Mathilda Cheung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Government Shorthand-Audio Typists Association, who is in dispute with the Hong Kong Government over conditions of employment.

.2.

Mrs Cheung's letter to Mr Johnson is identical to one she wrote on the same day to Mr Luard. In that case

Lord Goronwy-Roberts (to whom Mr Luard had passed Mrs Cheung's Flag Bletter) agreed that Mr Stewart should write to Mrs Cheung giving Flag Cher details of the procedure for submitting petitions.

information was then sought from the Hong Kong Government.

Flag D(8)3.

Further

This has now arrived and it would, therefore, be possible for the Minister to send Mr Johnson a fairly full explanation

Mr Johnson of the dispute as seen by the Hong Kong Government. has, however, asked for a reply which he can forward to Mrs Cheung and it would perhaps be best therefore if he were to be sent a copy of the letter Mr Stewart has already written to Mrs Cheung together with a covering letter of explanation. submit a draft on these lines.
