ACCOMMODATION FOR "HONG KONG AND GENERAL DEPARTMENT"

1. Your minute of 4 March refers. I appreciate that room K253 was one that Mr Harrington had in mind for HKGD. I had understood, however, that we had reached the conclusion that we should give up K253 in the hope of securing K271. That, anyway, is what I said, with Mr Levoir's agreement, in the final paragraph of my minute of 17 February to Mr Harrington.

2. I entirely agree that we shall have to stick out for satisfactory accommodation for the Staffing Section. I think we are agreed that the proposals that I put to Mr Harrington in my minute of 17 February are, in fact, satisfactory and, having worked these out, I think we should try to stick to them. I should be perfectly happy to discuss again with Mr Hall and Mrs Gregory but I am not sure that there is anything more to be said pending a reaction from Mr Harrington.

3. I have seen a copy of Mr Lewis' minute of 4 March to Mr Unwin proposing that G&GD should be dissolved from 28 March. I confess, however, that I am not clear how this proposal can be reconciled with the previous understanding that no decision would be made about the break-up of G&GD until an announcement had been made about the future of the dockyard.
