Dear Lord Goronwy Roberts,
Christopher Clements
I refer to the case of Christopher Clements a young constituent who is facing a charge of murder in Hong Kong.
While I am reasonably satisfied regarding the Legal Aid provisions, I am still concerned about two aspects of the situation on which I feel you could comment at this stage.
Firstly, I understand that the date of the trial has been fixed for the 12th December, and I understand that as the Courts go into Recess on the 18th December, there is a strong possibility that it may even be postponed until January, it is considered likely that the trial will last for more that six days. The effect of this on Christopher Clements can not possibly be beneficial to say the least.

The second point is that I understand this young man is being held in a small cell with little work/ entertainment/exercise. Again I feel that this is likely to have a very bad effect at this stage, and your observations would be greatly appreciated.
Another point which I should like to make is whether, and in what circumstances it might be possible to transfer a prisoner serving life in a Hong Kong Prison, from Hong Kong to a Prison in the UK? I understand that there has been at least one
precedent for this.
I should very much appreciate your comments on all these points.
Yours sincerely,
