"In order for an actual suicide to take place,
certain conditions must prevail in the "field." (both within and around the i ividual).
An individual comes to feel that his future is devoid of hope. He, or someone else, brings the alternative of suicide into his field. He attempts to communicate his conviction of hopelessness to others, in an e1.ort to gain their assur ace that some hope still exists for him."
If no
one in his field is hopeful or helpful, then a suicide attempt may be made.
Those who committed suicide found their worlds
pervaded by anxiety about suicide, and by
an attitude of helplessness to improve the situation . Suicide did not occur until the individual's aloneness was absolute.
This composite picture of the state of consciousness of a
suicidal person does not seem to fit with an qualities in
Mr. P. H. Liu's behavior. Because his personality, life
situation, and mental state show no factors that would lead
me As a psychologist to expect a suicide, I am led to search
for other possible causes of this young man's death.
