RESUMPTION OF LAND FOR PHASED IMPROVEMENTS
TO SOUTH LANTAU ROAD, SHUI HAU TO SHEK PIK (STAGE IV) LANTAU ISLAND, NEW TERRITORIES

The Director of Public Works has drawn up a comprehen- sive improvement scheme for that section of South Lantau Road between Cheung Sha and Keung Shan, providing for a 2-lane road 7.3 metres wide with a footpath on one side along the whole length of this section. The construction work is being carried out in four stages at an estimated cost of $35 million.

On 2nd November 1976, having considered memorandum XCR(76)220, Honourable Members advised that a total of 30, 545 square feet of private agricultural land located between Cheung Sha and Tong Fuk was required for Stages I to III, Resumption of the land was accordingly ordered and engineering works are currently in progress.

The Director of Public Works has now requested the
2 acquisition of a total of 2, 101.7 m2 (22,624 square feet) of private agricultural land along that section of the South Lantau Road from Shui Hau to Shek Pik so as to enable Stage IV construction work to be carried out starting in December 1977. This project is in Category A of the Public Works Programme. The general location of the land to be resumed is shown coloured orange on the identification plan at Annex A. The Secretary for the New Territories is satisfied that the area of the land to be resumed is the minimum necessary to implement the project. Compensation for resumption and clearance is estimated at $301,000 and funds are available within the approved project estimate to meet the expenditure.

The clearance will involve payment of compensation for crops, fruit trees, graves and bone pots as well as ex-gratia allowance for cultivators. Payment of 'Tun Fu' ceremonial fees and accommodation work costs associated with retaining walls, field bunds and cement drying grounds will also be necessary. No building land or temporary structures will have to be cleared and no families will be displaced.
