CORRUPTION IN HONG KONG
7. The Hong Kong Government is fully committed to the eradication of corruption. The Independent Commission Against
Corruption which was set up in 1974 has had considerable success in rooting out corruption and in mobilizing popular support for its work. The Commission should be given every opportunity to fulfil its important task.
DRUG ADDICTION IN HONG KONG
8.
Hong Kong has a considerable problem in this field, but it is one which the Hong Kong Government are fighting hard and with
some success. There is, for example, encouraging evidence that the proportion of Hong Kong's young people taking drugs has been decreasing, as a result of more effective law enforcement
as well as better preventive education and publicity.
THE DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH IN HONG KONG
9. It is the policy of Her Majesty's Government, shared by the Hong Kong Government, that there should be such progress towards
the equitable distribution of wealth in Hong Kong as is
consistent with Hong Kong's special circumstances.
A POSSIBLE DEBATE ON HONG KONG
10. Hong Kong has been the subject of a number of Questions in recent weeks from both sides of the House. I believe that
there have already been 50 Questions so far this year. While this is a matter for my Right Honourable friend the Lord President of the Council to consider in the first instance, my own view is that any matters that have not already been covered in this way would be more expeditiously, dealt with through Questions than in any general debate.
BRITISH INTERFERENCE IN HONG KONG
11. Her Majesty's Government and the Hong Kong Government both
have responsibilities for the welfare of the people of
Hong Kong. It is natural that there should be a regular exchange of views about the measures that should be taken to further the interests of the population of Hong Kong.
