mostly in the 18 to 30 age group. They are not "refugees". When interviewed, hardly any of them give political reasons for having entered Hong Kong. Indeed they maintain the superiority of the Communist system. They are simply immigrants in search of higher wages and easier living conditions which they have heard exist in Hong Kong. These are objectives with which one can sympathise, but no country permits uncontrolled immigration on such grounds, and the first concern of the Hong Kong government must be the interests of the existing population of Hong Kong.
