Illegal Immigration from China and Macao

During April 1977, 117 illegal immigrants ($5 from China and 18 from Macao) were arrested by the Police, compared with 116 last month (112 from China and 4 from Macao).

Of the 99 illegal immigrants from China arrested, 51 were land crossers, 47 bay crossers and 1 sec crosser. Most of them were between 16 - 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 11 on 11th April.

On 25th April, 3 farmers of Hai Feng County, whilst swimming towards Hong Kong, were intercepted by a Police launch off Ping Chau. One youth was released after his claim to "Chinese Resident" status was substantiated, the other 2 were repatriated to China on 26th April.

5 bodies, believed to be those of illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month (1 in the southern sector, 3 in the western sector and 1 in the northern sector).

The cumulative total of illegal immigrants arrested by or surrendered to the Police since 1st January 1968 is now 30, 196. The yearly totals are as follows:-
