Since 1st January 1974, 61,064 holders of Declarations of Identity departed for China and 48,862 returned to Hong Kong. The great majority had returned there to visit their families. The similar figures for Macao and elsewhere are available only since 1st April 1975; these are :-

During June 1977, 181 illegal immigrants were arrested compared with 78 last month. This is the third highest arrest figure since repatriation commenced on 30th November 1974 (235 were arrested in December 1974 and 191 in September 1975).

Of the 181 arrested, 51 were land crossers and 130 bay crossers. Most of them were between 16-25 years of age. ALL were processed at Takuling and consequently 178 were repatriated during the month, 1 was allowed to stay and the remaining 2 were awaiting a decision. The highest number of illegal
immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 13 on 29th June.

On 6th June, 2 young farmers from Canton entered the water at Yim Tin and swam to Kat 0. One of them was bitten by a shark while swimming across Mirs Day. His companion then pulled him to Kat 0 where they surrendered themselves to the Army. The injured man was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical treatment and he is still under medical care. The other youth was repatriated to China on 6th June.

4 bodies, believed to be those of illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month (1 in the eastern sector, 1 in the southern sector and 2 in the northern sector).
