DISCUSSION DOCUMENT ON NATIONALITY LAW
1. Under the terms of HMG's declaration made at the time of accession to the Communities UK nationals defined
for EEC purposes as:-
a. persons who are citizens of the United Kingdom
and Colonies or British Subjects not possessing
that citizenship or the citizenship of any other Commonwealth country or territory, who, in either case, have the right of abode in the United Kingdom, and are therefore exempt from United Kingdom immigration control;
b. persons who are citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies by birth or by registration or
naturalisation in Gibraltar, or whose father was
so born, registered or naturalised.
2 The abolition of the status of Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies will make necessary a change in the definition. It will be administratively convenient if all British Citizens can be accepted as United Kingdom nationals for EEC purposes.
3. As outlined in the discussion document, British Citizen
status will be held by:-
i. citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies who hold that status through their birth,
adoption, naturalisation or registration in the United Kingdom;
