to determine whether progress warrants an easing of restrictions and controls to permit the planning and construction of development projects, the completion of which would coincide with the completion of the highways projects".

Accordingly the following report sets out the present position in relation to the transport and highways systems serving Mid-Levels and Pok Fu Lam.

Public Transport

3

The swing to bus travel resulting from the operation of the bus priority scheme in the Mid-Levels and increased services for Pok Fu Lam, which was noted in paragraph 7 of XCC(75)30, has continued. Recent surveys indicate, for example, that during the morning peak period 40% of the trips by individuals made from the Mid-Levels are on franchised buses, 43% in cars or taxis and 17% on foot. These figures compare with 21%, 53% and 26% res- pectively before the bus priority scheme was introduced in April 1974.

Highway Improvements

4

The present position in respect of the highway improvement schemes reviewed in paragraph 9 of memorandum XCC(75)30 is as follows:

(a) Garden Road Roundabout Improvements

Work has begun and is due to be completed in January 1978.

(b) Robinson Road/Old Peak Road and Robinson

Road/Glenealy Junction Improvements The proposed works involve the alteration of the alignment, level and width of Robinson Road between the Hong Kong Z oological and Botanic Gardens and Raimondi College, the construction of a flyover at the Robinson Road/ Old Peak Road junction in front of the Albany on the same general alignment as Robinson Road, to cross over Albany Road at its junction with Robinson Road, and the construction of another flyover to carry Glenealy over the existing Robinson Road and link up with the widened portion of Robinson Road as shown on the plan
