Dear Hon. Sir,

Preservation of the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower

We understand that the above topic has been vigorously debated

for a number of years, especially recently.

As a' welfare institue serving public interest voluntarily, the Tsim Sha Tsui Kaifong Welfare. Assn. is most concerned about the subject. On March 4 we have again discussed the topic at our committee meeting. whereby we have reaffirmed our opinions, and are now respectfully. submitting the same to your esteemed.

1. Historical Value of Clock Tower:

We are strongly in favour of preserving the Clock Tower as a historical landmark.

The Tower is an invaluable heritage from the past. There is one' saying that it was erected in 1861 at Pedder Street on the Island. Then, to clear the way for extending Pedder Street, this Clock Tower was later removed to the Kowloon Railway Station at Tsim Sha Tsui.

The Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower stands at a most prominent site and gains its fame as a landmark of Hong Kong. Innumerable magazines, postcards, etc., especially tourism publications, have portrayed the full beautiful structure on their front covers. Combining its graceful architecture, age and practical use (e.g. to tell time) there is no wonder that the Clock Tower has fascinated many many tourists and local people. Its fame actually surpasses the Victoria Peak, Lion Rock, the night view of our illuminated "Fragrant Harbour" or any local relics of tourists interest.
