(a) To monitor the agreed policy of increasing the burial/cremation

ratio in favour of more cremation, the target being a ratio of 35/65 by 1985.

(b) To provide for the established practice of hillside burial of N.T. indigenous villagers to be brought within the law, and to prevent the illegal burial of Non-N.T. villagers on N.T.

hillsides.

PROGRESS MADE & PRESENT POSITION

Western New Territories and to replace existing tips at Ma Tso Lung and Siu Land Shui which will be full by 1983.

(a) ExCo has recently approved a policy of (a)(i) Monitor Tsuen Wan

stricter control over granting land as extensions to private cemeteries, but expressed concern over lack of cremation facilities and proposed that construction timing of new crematorium at Tsuen Wan be advanced. P.W.D. and U.S.D. have looked into this, and find that the project programme can be shortened by about 3 months. A Working Party has been established in order to monitor progress.

(b) Following further discussions between

Environment Branch, Solicitor General, U.S.D. and N.T.A., a final draft ExCo memorandum is now being circulated for comments prior to submission.

(ii) Review plans for

establishment of

other crematoria and allied facilities to ensure that the will be availabl when needed.

(b) Agree final versio

of ExCo paper and put to ExCo by March 1977.
