Driving Licences for Persons becoming resident in Hong Kong (ENV 30/01/12)

PURPOSE

To provide an equitable system for dealing with the issue of driving licences to persons holding over- seas driving licences who become resident in Hong Kong.

To plan the future role of the tram on the Island.

PROGRESS MADE & PRESENT POSITION

(a) Branch/Departmental agreement has

been reached that holders of recognised overseas driving licences should not be required to take a driving test in order to obtain a driving licence in Hong Kong.

(b) A revised package of proposals has

been agreed with UMELCO.

(c) A.G. is preparing revised draft

legislation and this Branch will circulate a new draft ExCo Memorandum for comment.

(a) Discussions have continued with the

Company on :-

(i) tram extension to Chai Wan; (ii) additional depot space; (iii) additional track reservations; (iv) implementation of a Profit Equilisation Scheme.

(b) The Company's detailed proposals are

awaited.

(c) The future role of the tramways will

also be considered in the context of the White Paper on Transport Policy.

NEXT QUARTER TARGETS

Go to ExCo before the end of the quarter.
