"THE BOAT PEOPLE"
1.
A few days ago I obtained from Jean Heidler, UNHCR representative here, a list of the numbers of refugees from among the boat people which various countries had accepted as at 1 January. I thought you would like to have this list which is reproduced here:
Australia

Canada

France

Total so far accepted
Apart from the above number there are still 2,936 'boat people' awaiting resettlement.
2.
The number 21 against the UK refers to the remaining 21 "Mather" refugees in Japan for whom no other places of resettlement had been found. Since then, of course, the UK number of acceptances has jumped to a total of 116.
