The Embassy's last Legal Adviser said privately that a lawyer could no longer pursue his practice with ease of conscience because of the way the courts are manipulated to suit the State's convenience.
Trade Unions exist but they are not free. They pay slavish obedience to the State and are merely an extension of the government's political control.

takes several months for a citizen to receive permission to obtain a passport even to leave the country on a visit to the neighbouring Yemen Arab Republic. If permission is given someone must be found who is ready to post a bond, usually 1000 dinars, against return. Recent reports suggest that the person raising the bond is himself jailed if the traveller fails to return.
