(iv) Both the media and individuals are
subject to considerable limitations on what they may say in public, and there have been suspensions of newspapers and some detentions for violations of regulations governing press freedom introduced in August/September 1976.
(v) The judiciary in Kuwait are independent
subject to the usual "national security" pro- visions and the overriding tendency for the Kuwaiti to prevail in litigation over the non-Kuwaiti whatever the legal merits of the case.
(vi) Trade Union freedom is not limited by law,
but in practice the rights of unions to take industrial action and particularly to free expression are circumstribed and trade union leaders have recently been detained for short periods.
(vii) Freedom to emigrate for Kuwaitis and non-
Kuwaitis alike is totally unrestricted.
