HKK 212/548/

Thank you for your letter of 31 January enclosing one from Iir John P Hachamara of 17 Sandhrook Road, Woolton, Liverpool, about conditions of employment and social welfare arrangements in Hong Kong.

Mr Hacilamara may rest assured that G is in regular consultation with the Hong Kong Government about measures to improve labour and social conditions in Hong Kong. I myself expect to talk to the Governor again about such matters "hon I see him in Hong Kong later this month. But I can say now thet I am satisfied that the Hong Kong Government is taking steps to deal with the problems to which Mr Meclamara has drawn atton- tion. I enclose, in case you wish to pass it on to him, a poto listing the various measures that the Hong Kong Government are taking with regard to lahour, social welfare, education, housing and medical and health matters.

lir Nacilamara also raised the question of corrumtion in Hong Kong. The position is that the Independent Commission against Corruption, which was set up in February 1974, has nade impressive progress both in rooting out corruption and in securing the support of public opinion for its task. I sure that the Commission should he given every opportunity to fulfil its important role.
