THE TUC AND HONG KONG

1.

Thank you for your letter of 7 October to John Stewart.

2. Put into context, the TUC motion on Hong Kong was of very minor importance. The Congress lasted for 4 days, of which only half a day was spent on international matters. The time spent on the Hong Kong motion including the speech by the NUTWG General Secretary was at most ten minutes and I understand from the Deputy Overseas Labour Adviser who attended the Congress that the motion was the last to be taken and attracted little attention at the time. The Congress as a whole had 115 motions put to it, a number of which were later combined into composite motions. Including the one on Hong Kong there were 9 motions on international matters. To the best of our knowledge, the UK media paid no special attention to the subject.
